{"id":3758,"date":"2021-08-19T16:59:03","date_gmt":"2021-08-19T16:59:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ufc-oversea-wp-blog.unionfab.com\/?p=217"},"modified":"2024-02-22T17:55:51","modified_gmt":"2024-02-22T17:55:51","slug":"what-is-tough-pla-and-why-do-you-need-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.unionfab.com\/de\/what-is-tough-pla-and-why-do-you-need-it\/","title":{"rendered":"What is \u201cTough PLA\u201d and Why Do You Need It?"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ufc-dtc-cms.oss-accelerate.aliyuncs.com\/blog\/20210819\/143604_ch7561n0t.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-717\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is \u201cTough PLA\u201d and Why Do You Need It?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are now many sources of \u201ctough PLA\u201d, but what is this mysterious material and why is it gaining popularity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I saw an announcement from filament provider Filamentive, who recently launched their version, called \u201cPLA Tough\u201d. It\u2019s said to be an \u201cindustrial-grade material\u201d that offers added strength, apparently increasing the impact resistance by a massive 750%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s much the same story for other sources that also provide \u201ctough\u201d PLA material options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s a bit of history to go through to understand how we arrived at a Tough PLA world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That part worked, but ABS had problems, particularly on the incredibly rudimentary machines of the day. Imagine, for example, attempting to 3D print ABS on an unheated acrylic print plate covered in blue painter\u2019s tape with an open-format 3D printer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sounds ridiculous now, and it actually was then, too. ABS has significant shrinkage when it cools, and this, without thermal aids, caused massive warping of almost every 3D print. I know this because it happened to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ufc-dtc-cms.oss-accelerate.aliyuncs.com\/blog\/20210819\/143618_195jpnd3y.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-721\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Introduction of PLA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then something interesting happened: PLA was introduced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a revelation, and dramatically sped up adoption of desktop 3D printers because it was vastly simpler to 3D print. Printed at a much lower temperature meant the thermal gradient was smaller and thus less warping occurred. It was then possible to 3D print smaller objects on unheated surfaces without too much trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But PLA\u2019s benefits hid two important issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, the lower softening temperature meant that PLA objects would suffer in high-temperature environments. A smartphone holder for a car, for example, might sag in the summer heat, as temperatures inside the vehicle on a summer day might high 50-60C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second problem is brittleness. PLA objects are quite hard, and this means that if you were to drop them, they might crack. Actually, they\u2019ll probably crack, as I\u2019ve experienced all too often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ABS didn\u2019t have that problem; it has a bit of \u201cgive\u201d, meaning it can take an impact and not shatter. This property drew those building parts requiring impact strength back to using ABS, and that interest led to today\u2019s heated print surfaces and sometimes heated chambers, where ABS can be 3D printed more or less reliably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, all that heat treatment is expensive, particularly if you are heating a chamber. That\u2019s not something everyone can afford, and that left out the \u201cPLA-only\u201d devices from producing impact-resistant parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduction of Tough PLA Materials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then a few years ago we began to see the emergence of \u201cTough PLA\u201d or similarly named materials. These are essentially PLA, but with additives that increase the impact strength. In other words, you could 3D print impact-resistant parts on a PLA-style device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s an attractive proposition for many who build mechanical parts, as they can be made on inexpensive equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there\u2019s still one catch: tough PLA still has mostly the same thermal properties as regular PLA. While your new tough PLA automobile smartphone holder won\u2019t shatter if you drop it, it will still sag if left in the heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t get me wrong here; tough PLA is a very useful material \u2014 just don\u2019t think it is a complete replacement for ABS.
